DOCUMENTATION / PRACTICAL HELP

Your sitemap is ready. What’s next?

Review your URLs, publish the XML file on your own website, and keep it up to date.

Review before you download

In the results list, uncheck pages you do not want in the file. Select all and Clear selection apply to the whole list. In image mode, selecting a page includes its extracted images. You must select at least one page to enable the download.

Look for duplicate parameter variants, old URLs, staging pages and internal search results. The generator does not resolve canonical tags. Use the URL selection checklist.

If the crawl was stopped, hit a limit or skipped pages, the result is marked partial. Review it against your own site inventory. Opening this help link from the results uses a new tab so the selection is preserved in the generator tab.

Download and upload

Save sitemap.xml. Downloading does not publish the file or submit it to a search engine. Upload it to the website whose URLs it contains, preferably at the site root:

https://example.com/sitemap.xml

Use your hosting dashboard, file manager or deployment process. If your platform already generates a sitemap automatically, inspect that file first. Do not overwrite a maintained sitemap without understanding how the platform updates it.

To keep both page and image sitemaps, rename one file before uploading, for example sitemap-images.xml. Both downloads initially use the filename sitemap.xml.

Add a robots.txt reference

Edit the target website’s existing /robots.txt without deleting its crawl rules. Add an absolute Sitemap URL for each file you publish:

Sitemap: https://example.com/sitemap.xml
Sitemap: https://example.com/sitemap-images.xml

These addresses are examples. Replace the host and filenames with your real published URLs. Understand the difference between crawl rules and indexing instructions.

Verify the public files

  • Open each sitemap URL while signed out. It should return XML, not a login page, error page or HTML download wrapper.
  • Check that the URLs use the correct public host and protocol.
  • Check a few listed pages and image URLs.
  • Confirm robots.txt references the exact file location.
  • If you use a search engine’s webmaster tools, submit the published sitemap there and inspect any reported errors.

A browser message saying that the XML has no style information is normal; the file does not need visual styling.

Keep the published file current

This generator runs only while you use it. It does not update the uploaded file automatically. Repeat the review and upload when URLs change, or use your website platform’s maintained sitemap if that fits better.

Read the update checklist or troubleshoot missing pages and crawl errors.
